Unforgettable Moments at Cafe Rara Avis: The Gem Opposite Camp Humphreys

A kaleidoscope of experiences awaits those lucky enough to travel, and as residents of South Korea, my husband and I have been privy to a myriad of them. One place that we hold dearly, embedded in the matrix of our memories, is the now-closed Cafe Rara Avis.

An Architectural Marvel with a Side of Military Magnificence

Located just across from the expansive Camp Humphreys airfield in the vibrant ville outside the main walk-in gate, Cafe Rara Avis stood as a beacon of creativity. Even before you entered, you were greeted by intricately crafted metal spider sculptures—both eerie and enthralling, setting the tone for the multisensory experience inside.

First Floor: A Culinary Prelude

Our journey began on the ground floor, a bakery paradise filled with an aromatic symphony of freshly baked pastries. From the counter, while we ordered our beloved lattes, the allure of croissants, muffins, and other baked wonders was irresistible. Right next to the coffee menu, to our amusement, was a section for fish food—a teaser of what awaited us above.

Second Floor: An Aquatic Lunch Affair

Ascending to the second floor, we found ourselves in a completely different world. The indoor section was an amalgamation of a dining area dotted with large fish tanks. Here, diners could indulge in their meals while feeding the vibrant fish that swam gracefully, often coming to the surface in anticipation of a treat.

But our favorite was the balcony. Choosing a table here allowed us to enjoy our lunch with a sweeping view of the Camp Humphreys airfield. Watching aircraft take off and land, all while feeding the fish from our elevated perch, made the experience surreal. It was a harmony of man-made marvels and nature, a juxtaposition that Cafe Rara Avis masterfully curated.

Third Floor: An Artistic Retreat

The topmost floor was reserved for adults, a sanctuary of art and tranquility. Styled like an art gallery, it showcased a variety of contemporary artworks. It was a space for reflection, for quiet conversations, and for soaking in the creativity that flowed through the cafe.

A Bittersweet Symphony of Memories

While our numerous visits to Cafe Rara Avis were always delightful, knowing that it has now permanently closed brings a pang of melancholy. Every lunch date there wasn't just a meal; it was an event, a journey through gastronomy, nature, art, and innovation.

A Tribute to A Bygone Era

To Cafe Rara Avis, a heartfelt thank you. In the ever-evolving landscape of Pyeongtaek-si, you were a constant source of joy, surprise, and warmth. Though your doors may be closed, the memories created within your walls will forever resonate with us and many others.

To those who never had the chance to experience this magical place, imagine a space where culinary delights met aquatic wonders, where art danced with nature, all under the watchful eye of soaring aircraft. That was Cafe Rara Avis for us.
