Monster Donuts: A Tale of High Hopes and Empty Shelves

The siren call of viral Instagram posts is hard to resist, especially when it's about food. In our case, it was the much-hyped Monster Donuts in Pyeongtaek. Each square of our feed painted a sugary dream of colorful and delectably crafted donuts, tempting us since their grand opening. After all, Jon, Russell, and I are no strangers to culinary escapades, and this was an invitation we couldn't decline.

Picture this: A fresh evening in Pyeongtaek after a hearty dinner with friends. The unanimous verdict was to embark on a dessert expedition. Given our penchant for trying out new places, Monster Donut was the chosen destination.

As our ride approached the venue, we were greeted with a vision straight out of a pop-art dream. The facade was unapologetically bold – a riot of pink juxtaposed with teal accents. The quirky cartoony graffiti seemed to be narrating whimsical tales of their own. The massive teal pig and larger-than-life donut and melting popsicle sculptures promised a feast, not just for our taste buds, but also for our eyes. And the cherry on top? The cartoony throne of donuts and lollipops; it was an Instagrammer's paradise.

Our excitement knew no bounds as we stepped inside. It was like walking into a candy wonderland – dripping teal walls, floor patterns reminiscent of confetti, and decorative elements that could make anyone's inner child jump with joy. With every step closer to the counter, our anticipation grew tenfold.

But, as fate would have it, a heart-wrenching sight awaited us. The once abundantly filled display of donuts was now barren. Every shelf empty. Every promise of a sugary bite unfulfilled. The disappointment was palpable. A dessert venture that began with high hopes now seemed like a quest with no reward.

We huddled for a brief discussion, weighing our options. And though our hearts were a little heavy, optimism prevailed. We decided to earmark Monster Donuts for a future visit. The allure of the second-floor seating and the hope of tasting those famed donuts remained.

As we retraced our steps out, the night was still young, and our dessert cravings unabated. But the universe works in mysterious ways. Perhaps, next time, Monster Donuts would welcome us with its sugary delights. Until then, the quest for the perfect donut continues.
