In our home, adventure isn’t just confined to traveling or exploring new places; it often revolves around food. And what better way to embrace culinary adventures than experimenting with the most universal comfort food of all time - pizza. This time, our gastronomic journey led us to a familiar name with an unfamiliar menu - South Korea’s Domino’s Pizza.
Opening the menu, we were greeted by an array of options that looked nothing like what we'd known Domino's for back in the States. In place of the usual suspects like 'ExtravaganZZa' or 'MeatZZa', we had choices like Crab & Rib House Pizza, Avocado Shrimp Pizza, and Potato Pizza. It was clear from the get-go that this was going to be a Domino's experience unlike any other.
There was one comforting sight, though: the Pepperoni Pizza. Yet, even this trusty classic had a Korean twist. Instead of the usual layering we were used to - sauce, cheese, and then pepperoni on top - the pepperoni here was snugly nestled under a generous blanket of cheese. Intriguing, to say the least.
After some delightful dithering, Jon and I were tempted by the Black Tiger Shrimp Pizza. The list of toppings read like a who's who of flavors: mushrooms, peppers, potatoes, pineapple, sumptuous black tiger shrimp, dollops of cream cheese, savory bulgogi, gooey mozzarella cheese, and onion. A melange of flavors and textures that promised an unparalleled pizza experience. And boy, did it deliver! Each bite was a delightful dance of flavors - the sweetness of the pineapple, the creaminess of the cheese, the meatiness of the bulgogi, and the juicy burst of the shrimp. We practically devoured it.
Russell, playing it relatively safe yet adventurous in his own way, went for the transformed pepperoni pizza. As he bit into his slice, the melty cheese pulled away to reveal the hidden pepperoni, adding that familiar taste amidst the new.
As we sat around our dining table, the vibrant colors and smells of Korean Domino's spread out before us, it felt like a perfect blend of the familiar and the new. While the flavors were uniquely Korean, the experience was universal: family time, laughter, and the shared joy of discovering something new. Even thousands of miles away from our original home, with each slice of that delectably unique pizza, we were reminded that the essence of comfort food is not just in its taste, but in the memories and feelings it evokes.
