Crossing Bungeoppang Off Our South Korean Bucket List: A Delicious Adventure at Little Prince Cafe

Updated: Aug 30, 2023

Have you ever had an obsession with trying a particular food item in a new country? For us, ever since we decided to move to South Korea, Bungeoppang had been sitting pretty at the top of our bucket list. And guess what? We finally got to cross it off! Our flavorful escapade led us to Little Prince Cafe in Asan, a charming café set against the tranquil backdrop of the Wollang Reservoir. Here’s how it all unfolded.

The Journey: Driven by Culinary Curiosity

What really fueled our trip was our scratch-off map of South Korea. This map is not just a regular map; it's a culinary and travel guide that suggests places to visit and foods to try. Bungeoppang was one of the delicacies etched onto this map, beckoning us to sample it. So when we heard Little Prince Cafe in Asan offered this treat, we took it as a sign and planned our trip.

The Drive to Asan

Our adventure commenced with a drive to Asan, an area in the Chungcheongnam-do province. Nestled amidst green hills and abundant natural beauty, the journey itself was a treat for the eyes. The closer we got to Little Prince Cafe, the more the landscapes seemed to whisper, “You’re in for something special.”

The First Impression: Enchantment by the Reservoir

Situated on the bank of the Wollang Reservoir, the cafe greeted us with open arms. With its rustic exterior and a laid-back atmosphere, Little Prince Cafe had a certain whimsy to it. The view of the reservoir lent a serene ambiance that you could lose yourself in. A perfect setting for trying something new!

Little Prince Cafe: Coziness Galore

The cafe exudes a warm, inviting feel. Wooden furnishings, plush cushions, and ambient lighting set the tone for a relaxed dining experience. And the aromas wafting in the air? Absolutely enticing!

The Star Attraction: Bungeoppang

For the uninitiated, Bungeoppang is a fish-shaped pastry commonly filled with sweet red bean paste. Little Prince Cafe offered two versions: Red Bean and Choux-Cream. Our excitement reached its peak as we placed our order.

Red Bean Bungeoppang: A Journey of Flavors and Textures

First up was the traditional Red Bean Bungeoppang. The exterior was crisp to perfection, giving way to the sweet, somewhat gritty red bean filling inside. Admittedly, the texture of the red bean was a bit odd, almost paste-like, yet it was oddly satisfying. The contrasting textures made each bite an adventure.

Choux-Cream Bungeoppang: The Creamy Delight

Next, we delved into the Choux-Cream version. The pastry shell was similarly crispy, but the filling was worlds apart. Smooth, creamy, and subtly sweet, the Choux-Cream Bungeoppang was like biting into a little piece of heaven.

A Bucket List Experience: Scratch and Savor

The joy of trying Bungeoppang was two-fold. Not only did we satiate our taste buds, but we also got to scratch off that tantalizing item from our South Korean scratch-off map. There’s something incredibly satisfying about physically scratching off an experience, as if imprinting it deeper into our memories.

Complementary Delights

Though our primary focus was on Bungeoppang, it's worth mentioning that the cafe also offers a range of beverages. A cup of their aromatic coffee proved to be the perfect complement to our Bungeoppang tasting session.

Reflections: More Than Just Food

As we sat there, enjoying our delectable treats by the tranquil reservoir, it struck us that this experience was about more than just food. It was about embracing a new culture, exploring an unfamiliar place, and sharing those special moments with each other.

Addressing the Curious

For those who are interested in embarking on their own Bungeoppang adventure, Little Prince Cafe is located at 224-3 Wolrang-ri, Eumbong-myeon, Asan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. Trust us, it's worth the trip!
