A Walk Into the Unknown: Our Tower of Power Trail Adventure

Updated: Sep 18, 2023

Our eighth hike in the 22 Peaks in 22 Weeks challenge led us on an unbeaten path — quite literally — as we ventured into the less-traveled trails of Geumsam Mountain. With a notable elevation of 823 feet, this untamed pathway offered us a spontaneous adventure into the wild, which we affectionately named the "Tower of Power Trail."

Into the Wild

As we ventured deeper into Yeonginsan-myeon, it quickly became apparent that our chosen path was in stark contrast to the maintained trails we were accustomed to. The absence of a well-defined path encouraged us to tap into our adventurous spirits, letting curiosity and the call of the wild guide our steps. This was not just a hike, but a vibrant exploration, where every turn beckoned with the unknown, inviting us to forge our own path in a verdant wonderland.

The Unmarked Peak

Unlike our previous endeavors, reaching the peak did not greet us with the familiar stone marker bearing the mountain's name and elevation, a customary presence in our previous hikes. Instead, we found ourselves amidst towering power lines, standing like silent sentinels overseeing the mountain range. Their imposing structures, strangely blending with the natural surroundings, gave the peak its distinctive “Tower of Power” signature, lending an industrial touch to the wild scenery.

Nature's Viewing Gallery

But nature had its own way of marking this special spot. Creative souls had fashioned chairs from ropes and tied them to the robust tree branches, offering hikers a unique seating arrangement to soak in the marvelous views. As we seated ourselves on these makeshift thrones, we were treated to stunning vistas of the Seongnae Reservoir, an expansive body of water that lay like a tranquil blue gem amidst the vibrant green folds of the hills.

It was a place where man-made wonders met natural beauty, offering a quiet space to appreciate the merging of two worlds. The towering power lines added a surreal touch, framing the views in stark, vertical lines that contrasted with the rolling, organic curves of the landscape.

Reflections Across the Water

The peak also offered a reflective moment as we looked across to the familiar paths of our sixth adventure — the Pinnacle Trail. From this vantage point, we could appreciate the journey we had embarked on, tracing the paths we had conquered and envisioning the trails yet to be explored. It was a tranquil moment, where past achievements and future adventures met, unified by the sparkling waters of the reservoir that stretched out beneath us, capturing the sky’s hues in its calm surface.

Conclusion

Our “Tower of Power” trail adventure was a testament to the beauty that lies in the unknown, urging us to embrace spontaneity and the road less traveled. As we ventured back down the untamed paths, amidst the calls of hidden birds and rustling leaves, we carried with us the raw beauty and quiet surprises that Geumsam held.

With eight peaks behind us, we looked forward to the next chapters with rejuvenated spirits and hearts open to the unexpected joys that lay in the paths less trodden. Our journey into the wild had reminded us that sometimes, the most beautiful destinations are those found not in the clearly marked paths, but in the vibrant heart of the unknown, where adventure awaits at every turn.
